Background (Reasons for attempting The Race)
Like a lot of others i turned to Triathlon in my late twenties as my hamstrings had begun to object to the stop/start twisting & turning that is par for the course for a GAA midfielder. Since the inaugural Achill Roar in 09, Adventure racing has been more my scene, there's nothing like hurtling down the side of a mountain with little or no control over the direction or speed you're descending at. I have quite a bit of experience of races in the 3 to 6 hour bracket but have yet to challenge myself to the real long stuff, this race certainly seems to fit the bill. At least running through the night shouldn't shock my system to much, with 3 kids in the last 3 years I've already forgotten what a full nights sleep is. Don't know where I'm going to find the time to fit in all the training thats going to be required, but thankfully I've an extremely understanding wife so hopefully I'll do enough over the next few months to see me arriving in Donegal fit and raring to go.
