Background (Reasons for attempting The Race)

I have a lengthy outdoors and general sporting background from rugby, where I played in Ireland and the UK at representative level, to mountaineering where I spent time on the first Irish expedition to climb Everest. My move into to adventure racing came out of my retirement from rugby as I looked to combine my love of the outdoors, staying fit and enjoying the camaraderie of competition and achievement. I'd previously planned to enter the race in 2014 but injury meant I could not continue with my training so I had to withdraw. In 2013 I represented Ireland at the Triathlon world championships and was due to travel to Edmonton for the 2014 world championships. Injury struck again and I bust my shoulder 2 weeks before Edmonton so had to pull out as I could only really swim in a circle having 1 arm I could not use! I got back into training after some rehab and took on Wicklow Tri clubs Beast of the East race in September followed by the "tropical" conditions of the Dublin City Marathon at the end of October and last week completing the fantastic Run The Line race in aid of Dublin/Wicklow Mountain Rescue. I guess we'll not be running in 20 degree heat in March so I better start sleeping in the fridge to acclimatise.

I am entering to experience and enjoy a unique and tremendous challenge that also raises money for charity....I've spent 25 years of my career sitting at a desk so the opportunity to get out into the wild simply can't be resisted!

Regular competitor in triathlons (Sprint, Olympic and double Olympic distances), Acquathlons, endurance swims, ½ and full Marathons.
